Delurk!

October 9, 2007

I evidently missed Delurking Week 2007, which was way back in January. And there was a great little Delurking event last week, which I also missed on my blog, but participated in on a couple of other blogs.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the terms “Lurking” and “Delurking”, lurking is the act of stopping by someone’s blog and NOT leaving a comment. Delurking is the act of leaving a comment so that the author knows you’ve been hanging around reading all of the funny, sad, moving, emotional, hilarious, or downright nutty posts he or she has been writing.

Delurking is important because anyone with a blog knows “You comment, therefore I blog.” I mean really, while blogging is therapeutic in multiple ways, it’s the comments that keep us bloggers rolling. We’re always putting our most super-impressive thoughts (just nod and smile here) down in blog postings in hopes that you, the reader, will think we’re incredibly witty, insightful, earth-shatteringly intelligent, or just plain silly. When we watch our stats tick upward, but no comments happen, we doubt ourselves. We wonder if that last post was the stinkiest piece of writing we’ve ever done. It’s a downward spiral, with no hope of redemption really, unless you COMMENT.

I saw one blogger that had a list of rules in her sidebar. The most important rule was, “If thou readest, thou shalt comment.” Unless you are just aiming to be a complete idiot and are threatening my personal safety or that of my family… leave a COMMENT dangit! We all want you to agree, disagree, share your own story, link to some other interesting thing you read, point out another way to look at it, tell us that was the worst post ever, or whatever. You are part of the equation here, soΒ we need your input. The rest of the folks reading this darn blog want to know your opinions, too.

So, while it’s not Delurking Week, or Delurking Day, it is Delurking Time on this blog.

Y’all come out of the woodwork, ya hear?

i lurk all the time, but that’s just because i don’t feel that i have anything intelligent to contribute. but i look froward to your blog daily so thank you so much for writing, it keeps me sane !

I lurk and delurk. However, I think that the readers really should agree with everything I/you post, as well as lavish us with great kudos for being incredibly witty, insightful, earth-shatteringly intelligent, or just plain silly. But that’s just my opinion. Clearly it isn’t the opinion of others or else my posts would be overflowing with comments keeping my blog afloat….

I only lurked for about 2 months…that’s pretty good for a girl who wants to be anonymous on the internet.

    You know I’m here…..

When my sister finally gets married this Saturday, I should be able to have much more computer time. My blog has totally suffered for it and I’m afraid people are leaving me……

I’m here reading at least weekly my friend! This thing called nursing school has me a bit busy these days. Love reading & have even forwarded your link to quite a few folks. So, you probably have even more lurkers out there! πŸ˜‰

I think I just have a lurking kind of personality (which is scary, makes me sound pretty psychopathic) as I can never think of much to comment besides “me too.” Just to let you know that I’m reading. And I give you many kudos for “being incredibly witty, insightful, earth-shatteringly intelligent, or just plain silly” — I think you have a great blog.

Cris – I KNOW you have great things to say, because you have commented before. I appreciate your thoughts. Keep ’em coming! πŸ™‚

Donna, Lynda and TulipGirl – I know you are faithful readers and commenters. Thanks for being there for me. I’m blessed to call you all friends (and family).

Mrs. H – I do know you’re there and I’m so glad. I don’t think your blog has suffered, although your faithful readers would, of course, LOVE to hear more from you. πŸ™‚ I still see the same commenters over at your place, so I think your folks are still your folks, even if you’ve been away more than usual.

Robyn – Glad you’re still there. I’ll forgive you for lurking since nursing school is keeping you super busy. And of course since you’re promoting me! πŸ˜‰ I thought of you on Sunday while I was doing Race for the Cure. You were the first person to drag me into it!

Linn – I’m glad to meet you and know you’re reading. Thanks very much for the kudos. I am so glad you enjoy the blog. I look forward to hearing from you more. Are you a stepparent?

Well, I mean you ARE incredibly witty, insightful and earth-shatteringly intelligent, so what does it matter what I think???

But no, you are correct, we begin to doubt our ability to communicate when people don’t comment.

What do they call it when people you know stop by and read your blog and then e-mail you privately because they are of the non-computer generation who feels their comments should be just bewteen us? Besides my mother, I have 5 or 6 of these friends.

I am still here, reading, lurking, and commenting when I can think of something close to witty and insightful as most of your writings are worthy of πŸ™‚

Jeanie – I have no idea what that’s called. We’ll have to come up with a name… How about a BLED? A Blog-Lurker-Email-Delurker? Or a BLEC? A Blog-Lurker-Email-Commenter? Or a COBE? Comment Only By E-mail? Either way (on the blog or just in the e-mail), it appears to be goodness.

See this link for someone else’s opinion on whether e-mail commenting or blog commenting is better:

There are some SERIOUSLY funny blogosphere words out there. I feel a new post coming on…

Chelly – I’m glad you’re there. I love your comments, love your insight. Hope things are going smoothly with the move. Nothing quite like PCS’ing to get your life all scrambled, eh?

I love your blog and check it daily. I’m a new convert to Google Reader, which is awesome.

    Keep it going friend.

    Stephanie,

I agree, and while I do lurk more than I delurk, it’s only out of ignorance, I can assure you. While I am a stranger to you, we share the common bond of Jeanie, and I feel a bit silly leaving comments on your blog. HOWEVER, that being said, I’ve also not been introduced to the common courtesy of the blog….(CCOB)~but now I know and shall delurk more and lurk less….

    Keep the instruction comin’!

Daisy and PlaygroundDropout – Glad you’re reading. Love your comments. Keep ’em coming!

Chick – Thanks for the delurking. LOVE your blog! Keep making everybody laugh until their sides hurt.

Heather – I’m so pleased to meet you in the blogosphere. I welcome any comments you might have. Isn’t it lovely to have Jeanie in common? She’s awesome! I’ll stop by and check out your corner of the blogosphere, too.
